Separation of Terumos and Ma’asros

The Complete Guide to Separating Terumos and Ma'asros

Before You Separate Terumos and Ma'asros

1. Separate a little more than 1% of each type of fruit, vegetable, or product, and set it aside near the rest of the produce.

2. Prepare the coin on which you will redeem the sanctity of the produce, or join Keren HaMa’asros.

The Blessing on Separating Terumos and Ma'asros

If the produce is tevel vadai (terumos and ma’asros have definitely not been separated from it), then a brachah is recited when separating terumos and ma’asros:

If if it possible that terumos and ma’asros have already been separated from the produce, skip the brachah and recite just the nusach for separating terumos and ma’asros.

The part on the northern side of that which has been separated, which is in excess of one-hundredth, shall henceforth be Terumah Gedolah. (When setting aside from several types of produce simultaneously, one should add: from each kind of produce for its own kind).
The remaining one-hundredth which has been separated and nine similar hundredths on the northern side of the produce, shall henceforth be Ma’aser Rishon (from each kind of produce for its own kind).
That one-hundredth which is separated that is included in what is Ma’aser Rishon, shall henceforth be Terumas Ma’aser (from each kind of produce for its own kind).
And Ma’aser Sheini shall henceforth be on the southern side of the produce (from each kind of produce for its own kind), and if the produce is liable to Ma’aser Ani, then Ma’aser Ani shall henceforth be on the southern side of the produce (from each kind of produce for its own kind).

The Blessing on Redeeming Sanctity (Chillul)

The brachah is recited only when separating terumos and ma’asros from tevel vadai (produce from which terumos and ma’asros have definitely not been separated) that is definitely from a ma’aser sheini year, i.e., fruits that started growing in the first, second, fourth, and fifth years of the shemitah cycle; vegetables that were harvested in those years, and grain and pulses that reached a third of their growth in those years.
If it is possible that the produce has already been tithed and its sanctity redeemed, or it may belong to the third or sixth years of the shemitah cycle, skip the brachah and recite only the nusach for redeeming the sanctity of the produce.

If you are a member of Keren HaMa’asros, say this wording:

Take the little more than 1% that you separated and wrap it in a bag.
Place the bag in the garbage. Now you can eat the produce.
